I've had discussions where some people have misunderstood what is indisputable via a direct observation, therefore I've added this addendum. Anyone can question an interpretation, or what might be considered beyond what is directly
observable. In this addendum I whish to add some clarity and insights to the observable physical functions I discussed.
For the Earths rotation, the pendulum swing of a grandfather
clock, the oscillation of a quartz crystal, etc., they are all observable
physical processes that happen in time and are used to define a unit of time. That observable
process is not disputable, it is that they change position at a relatively consistent
speed per distance. We equate that physical process to a unit of time.
What is absolute for distance to have any physical relevance
is also indisputable however, I’ve known this aspect to be more difficult to recognize.
While I stated it requires in some form a change of position of energy, perhaps
that might be clearer if I flip it to ask… Can anyone come up with any possible
example how a distance has physical relevance without the change of position of
any energy in any form?
The two indisputable facts above merely confirm that on an empirical
level space(distance) and time are one inseparable phenomenon.
Lastly in connecting all changes that we measure
and define with time, that occur in our observable Universe, I only hinted
at a connection to the physical aspects I discussed. Whether we look at the change for, atoms combining into molecules, protons being smashed to component
particles, planets or galaxies movements, our own aging, etc., the common underlying
process for all of this change is a change of position of energies. That is coincidentally,
the same underlying physical process that is inherent in how we directly observe
and ascribe a unit of time. At the most fundamental level it is a defined change of position of energy (a time unit) compared to another change of position of energy.
